Drowned swim­mer re­cov­ered

Author­i­ties say an In­dian Head man ap­pears to have drowned in the Port To­bacco River Tues­day af­ter­noon near Chapel Point State Park. The body was re­cov­ered hours lat­ers by a diver.

Robert Earl Claggett Jr., 27, and a woman ar­rived at the park around 1:30 p.m. on Tues­day, po­lice say. The two swam in the river for a while be­fore com­ing back onto the beach. The woman told Nat­u­ral Re­sources Po­lice that she had fallen asleep for about an hour, and when she awoke she could not find Claggett. The woman then called a friend to help her look, and when Clagett still re­mained miss­ing, she called 911.

Af­ter re­ceiv­ing the call at about 4 p.m., Nat­u­ral Re­sources Po­lice and deputies of the Charles County Sher­iff’s Of­fice re­sponded to the area and with the as­sis­tance of a Mary­land State Po­lice he­li­copter, be­gan search­ing the water and shore­line for the miss­ing man. Mem­bers of the Charles County Dive and Res­cue Com­pany 13 also joined the search us­ing side-scan SONAR tech­nol­ogy equipped to their boat.

Around 5:30 p.m., a Com­pany 13 diver re­cov­ered the body about 80 yards off the beach.

The body has been sent to the Of­fice of the Chief Med­i­cal Ex­am­iner in Bal­ti­more for an au­topsy. Twit­ter: @An­drew_IndyNews
