Drowned swimmer recovered

Authorities say an Indian Head man appears to have drowned in the Port Tobacco River Tuesday afternoon near Chapel Point State Park. The body was recovered hours laters by a diver.
Robert Earl Claggett Jr., 27, and a woman arrived at the park around 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, police say. The two swam in the river for a while before coming back onto the beach. The woman told Natural Resources Police that she had fallen asleep for about an hour, and when she awoke she could not find Claggett. The woman then called a friend to help her look, and when Clagett still remained missing, she called 911.
After receiving the call at about 4 p.m., Natural Resources Police and deputies of the Charles County Sheriff’s Office responded to the area and with the assistance of a Maryland State Police helicopter, began searching the water and shoreline for the missing man. Members of the Charles County Dive and Rescue Company 13 also joined the search using side-scan SONAR technology equipped to their boat.
Around 5:30 p.m., a Company 13 diver recovered the body about 80 yards off the beach.
The body has been sent to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore for an autopsy. Twitter: @Andrew_IndyNews
