Vol­un­teers still needed for an­nual Day of Car­ing

United Way of Charles County will host its 22nd An­nual Day of Car­ing on Sept. 1. The event has been a Septem­ber com­mu­nity tra­di­tion since 1995 where part­ner agen­cies are able to have vol­un­teers come in and take care of some of their needs.

This year, 14 agen­cies sub­mit­ted 32 projects, re­quir­ing more than 240 vol­un­teers. Some of this year’s projects are gar­den­ing, land­scap­ing, arts and crafts, in­door and out­door paint­ing, meal de­liv­ery, con­struc­tion type jobs and an IT/web­site project.

The day be­gins at 7:30 a.m. at the Greater Wal­dorf Jaycees, with a light break­fast be­fore head­ing out to a de­sired lo­ca­tion. “Live United” T-shirts will be avail­able to ev­ery­one that vol­un­teers. Bring a bagged lunch, snacks and ad­di­tional wa­ter or soda for con­sump­tion while at projects.

Dead­line nears for gen­eral assem­bly leg­isla­tive pro­pos­als

The sub­mis­sions for the Charles County Com­mis­sion­ers 2017 Gen­eral Assem­bly Leg­isla­tive Pack­age must be re­ceived by the Of­fice of the County At­tor­ney by no later than 4 p.m. Fri­day, Aug. 26.

Pro­pos­als should be hand-de­liv­ered to the County At­tor­ney’s Of­fice at the Charles County Gov­ern­ment Build­ing, 200 Bal­ti­more St., La Plata; sent via email to Bai­leyL@ CharlesCoun­tyMD.gov; or sent via U.S. mail to: Leg­isla­tive Re­quest, Of­fice of the County At­tor­ney, P.O. Box 2150, La Plata, MD 20646.

Each pro­posal re­quir­ing Mary­land Gen­eral Assem­bly en­act­ment will be in­cluded in a pre­lim­i­nary pack­age avail­able for dis­tri­bu­tion on Fri­day, Sept. 2, and pre­sented to the county com­mis­sion­ers at a pub­lic hear­ing at 6 p.m. Tues­day, Sept. 13. Any­one sub­mit­ting a pro­posal will be asked to at­tend the hear­ing to pro­vide a brief syn­op­sis of the ini­tia­tive and an­swer ques­tions from those in at­ten­dance.

A pre­lim­i­nary leg­isla­tive pack­age work ses­sion will be sched­uled to re­view the pro­pos­als and de­ter­mine which ones will be in­cluded in the county com­mis­sion­ers’ 2017 Gen­eral Assem­bly Leg­isla­tive Pack­age and for­warded to the Charles County Del­e­ga­tion for con­sid­er­a­tion.

Work­shop aims to em­power do­mes­tic vi­o­lence vic­tims

Fon­tella Moody is one vic­tim of thou­sands who has suf­fered from do­mes­tic vi­o­lence and sex­ual as­sault. As a re­sult, she is con­victed to share her story and help em­power — along with five lo­cal non­profit or­ga­ni­za­tions — women who have, or are ex­pe­ri­enc­ing do­mes­tic vi­o­lence and/or sex­ual abuse in Charles County, to find and cre­ate the life they de­sire in a free, in­au­gu­ral Lean In & Let Go work­shop Aug. 20. The time and lo­ca­tion re­main con­fi­den­tial given the sen­si­tiv­ity of per­sonal iden­ti­ties, ac­cord­ing to a re­lease.

Non­profit part­ners, all of which serve vic­tims through­out Charles County, in­clude the Cen­ter for Abused Per­sons; Cather­ine Foun­da­tion; Catholic Char­i­ties’ An­gel’s Watch Shel­ter; Life­styles Inc.; and SLS Min­istries Inc.’s Me­ta­mor­pho­sis. It is Lean In & Let Go’s mis­sion to pos­i­tively im­pact the lives of lo­cal women vic­tims of do­mes­tic vi­o­lence and/or sex­ual abuse.

CSM to host Night Out at the Ball­park for alumni, friends

Col­lege of South­ern Mary­land Alumni and Friends Con­nec­tion Night Out at the Ball­park will be 6:30 p.m. Aug. 26 at Re­gency Fur­ni­ture Sta­dium, 11765 St. Li­nus Drive, Wal­dorf. Gates open at 6 p.m. and the game be­gins at 7:05 p.m. There will be an all-you-can eat pic­nic buf­fet with raf­fles, prizes, games and more while cheer­ing on the South­ern Mary­land Blue Crabs vs. the Sugar Land Skeeters. Youth orches­tra au­di­tions to be held next month

The Charles County Youth Orches­tra is look­ing for ad­vanced high school string, wind, brass and per­cus­sion stu­dents. We es­pe­cially need up­per brass and low strings. Re­hearsals are Tues­day evenings.

En­core Strings has open­ings for all mid­dle school level string play­ers. Re­hearsals are Satur­day morn­ings.

Tri-County shel­ter closed Sept. 10-11

The Tri-County An­i­mal Shel­ter, lo­cated at 6707 An­i­mal Shel­ter Road, Hugh­esville, will be closed to the pub­lic Satur­day, Sept. 10 and Sun­day, Sept. 11 for staff train­ing.

An­i­mal shel­ter staff are at­tend­ing a sem­i­nar for shel­ters, res­cues and an­i­mal con­trol per­son­nel. This two-day sem­i­nar will cover top­ics for both cats and dogs which will in­clude in­for­ma­tion on shel­ter in­takes, en­rich­ment pro­grams for the an­i­mals, tem­per­a­ment eval­u­a­tions and an­i­mal train­ing.
