Teen critically injured in accident
Was riding bike near Waldorf intersection
A teen girl was flown to the hospital with life-threatening injuries after she was struck by a van on Wednesday afternoon while riding a bicycle in Waldorf,
according to police.
Around 1:15 p.m., deputies of the Charles County Sheriff’s Office responded to the area of Middletown Road and Ethridge Drive for a reported accident involving a bicyclist. Upon arrival, officers found the girl, 15, suffering from what appeared to be critical injuries, authorities say. The driver of the SUV, a woman who had been traveling northbound on Middletown Road, remained at the scene.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the driver’s view was obstructed by other vehicles stopped in the left, northbound lane, police say. As the driver approached the intersection, the girl entered the crosswalk on her bicycle. The driver had insufficient time to react and struck the girl, a press release states.
The Charles County Sheriff’s Office traffic operations unit is continuing the investigation.
