Girl hit by van dies in hospital
A teen girl who was hit by a van while riding a bicycle across a Waldorf intersection on Wednesday has died from her injuries, police said.
She has been identified as Nadine Rafaella Soquiño Leyson, 15, of Waldorf.
Around 1:15 p.m. on Aug. 24, deputies with the Charles County Sheriff’s Office responded to the area of Middletown Road and Ethridge Drive for a reported
accident involving a bicyclist. Upon arrival, officers found Leyson, who had been critically injured in the collision, authorities said. The driver of the van, a woman who had been traveling northbound on Middletown Road, remained at the scene.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the driver’s view was obstructed by other vehicles stopped in the left, northbound lane, police say. As the driver approached the intersection, Leyson entered the crosswalk on her bicycle. The driver had insufficient time to react and struck the girl, a press release states.
Leyson was flown to a hospital, but succumbed to her injuries late Thursday afternoon.
The Charles County Sheriff’s Office traffic operations unit is continuing the investigation.
