Volunteers needed for Community Resource Day
The Charles County Homeless and Emergency Shelter Committee is planning its eighth Community Resource Day to help those in need throughout Charles County. The event is scheduled for Oct. 5 at the Greater Waldorf Jaycees Community Center in Waldorf. Services will be provided from10 a.m.-3 p.m.
Volunteers are needed to be “navigators” to assist the clients by guiding them through the many services that will be offered. Volunteers are asked to arrive at the Jaycees by 9:30 a.m. that morning for a brief training.

The Tri-County Animal Shelter will host the following
October monthly promotions:
Adopt a Shelter Dog Month (Saturday, Oct. 1Monday, Oct. 31): The shelter is giving a free toy with every adopted dog. Those who are unable to adopt are asked to donate pet food, treats, toys, or newspapers, or consider volunteering time. National Pitbull Awareness Day (Saturday, Oct. 22): Multiple rescue organizations will be on-site to complete adoptions for bully breeds and answer questions. National Cat Day (Saturday, Oct. 29): The shelter is reducing the kitten
adoption fee to $40 and adult cat fee to $20. Senior cats are available at no-cost on this special day. Halloween Paw-ty (Saturday, Oct. 29): Wear a Halloween costume and adopt an animal at a reduced fee, and then go trick-or-treating in each of the shelters’ rooms for yummy treats.

CSM faculty, staff to attend All-College Convocation Friday
Most administrative offices and services of the College of Southern Maryland will be unavailable the afternoon of Friday, Sept. 30, as faculty and administration gather for the college’s seventh annual All-College Convocation on the La Plata Campus.
The Leonardtown and Prince Frederick campuses will close at 11 a.m. and the La Plata Campus will close at 11:45 a.m.
The fitness centers and pools will operate on normal schedules. For classes scheduled after 11 a.m., students should check with their individual instructors. Essential services will operate on a normal schedule.
The Connections Literary Series and the CSM Cause Theatre performance of “Benched” will take place as scheduled.
The convocation will bring together faculty and staff as one college to collaborate and celebrate one of the college’s core values, respect. As part of that value, staff and faculty are working together to collect jars of peanut butter that will be donated to food pantries in Calvert, Charles and St. Mary’s counties.
During the All-College Convocation, online access will be available at www.csmd.edu and through my.CSMD services. Classes begin for the Fall 10-week session Oct. 3. The seven-week Fall Minisession II will begin Oct. 24.

Neibauer to host Free Dentistry Day
People in the Waldorf community, and surrounding areas, will have the opportunity to receive free dental services at 301-870-4553 on Saturday, Oct. 1.
Doctors and team at Neibauer Dental Care will be improving the oral health of the community as part of Free Dentistry Day, a day dedicated to providing free dental care to the growing number of Americans without dental insurance. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, approximately 108 million Americans are living without dental insurance.
During Free Dentistry Day, a choice of one free filling, cleaning or extraction will be provided per patient 7 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 1, at 117 St. Patricks Drive in Waldorf. Library seeks local authors for event
Charles County Public Library will host it’s semi-annual Author’s Reception on 2-4 p.m. Feb. 18, 2017, at the Waldorf West Library.
Any local authors (currently living in Southern Maryland) who would like to have their work featured at the Author’s Reception should submit a copy of their book (it will be returned at the author’s request after the event or can be added to our circulating collection) to Sarah Guy, program coordinator, at any Charles County Public Library branch.
All items submitted will be reviewed by CCPL’s Acquisitions Department to verify the submission meets library minimum standards. All submissions must be received at the library no later than 8 p.m. Dec. 15. Authors must include contact information and must be able to attend the Author’s Reception on Feb. 18. Authors will present a brief overview of their book and will be able to sell copies to the public.
