Vol­un­teers needed for Com­mu­nity Re­source Day

The Charles County Home­less and Emer­gency Shel­ter Com­mit­tee is plan­ning its eighth Com­mu­nity Re­source Day to help those in need through­out Charles County. The event is sched­uled for Oct. 5 at the Greater Wal­dorf Jaycees Com­mu­nity Cen­ter in Wal­dorf. Ser­vices will be pro­vided from10 a.m.-3 p.m.

Vol­un­teers are needed to be “nav­i­ga­tors” to as­sist the clients by guid­ing them through the many ser­vices that will be of­fered. Vol­un­teers are asked to ar­rive at the Jaycees by 9:30 a.m. that morn­ing for a brief train­ing.

Many non­prof­its and gov­ern­ment or­ga­ni­za­tions will be par­tic­i­pat­ing that day to pro­vide ser­vices such as

The Tri-County An­i­mal Shel­ter will host the fol­low­ing

Oc­to­ber monthly pro­mo­tions:

Adopt a Shel­ter Dog Month (Satur­day, Oct. 1Mon­day, Oct. 31): The shel­ter is giv­ing a free toy with ev­ery adopted dog. Those who are un­able to adopt are asked to do­nate pet food, treats, toys, or news­pa­pers, or con­sider vol­un­teer­ing time. Call the shel­ter at 301-932-1713 for more in­for­ma­tion about vol­un­teer­ing or avail­able pets. Na­tional Pit­bull Aware­ness Day (Satur­day, Oct. 22): Mul­ti­ple res­cue or­ga­ni­za­tions will be on-site to com­plete adop­tions for bully breeds and an­swer ques­tions. Na­tional Cat Day (Satur­day, Oct. 29): The shel­ter is re­duc­ing the kitten

adop­tion fee to $40 and adult cat fee to $20. Se­nior cats are avail­able at no-cost on this spe­cial day. Hal­loween Paw-ty (Satur­day, Oct. 29): Wear a Hal­loween cos­tume and adopt an an­i­mal at a re­duced fee, and then go trick-or-treat­ing in each of the shel­ters’ rooms for yummy treats.

CSM fac­ulty, staff to at­tend All-Col­lege Con­vo­ca­tion Fri­day

Most ad­min­is­tra­tive of­fices and ser­vices of the Col­lege of South­ern Mary­land will be un­avail­able the af­ter­noon of Fri­day, Sept. 30, as fac­ulty and ad­min­is­tra­tion gather for the col­lege’s sev­enth an­nual All-Col­lege Con­vo­ca­tion on the La Plata Cam­pus.

The Leonard­town and Prince Fred­er­ick cam­puses will close at 11 a.m. and the La Plata Cam­pus will close at 11:45 a.m.

The fit­ness cen­ters and pools will op­er­ate on nor­mal sched­ules. For classes sched­uled af­ter 11 a.m., stu­dents should check with their in­di­vid­ual in­struc­tors. Es­sen­tial ser­vices will op­er­ate on a nor­mal sched­ule.

The Con­nec­tions Lit­er­ary Se­ries and the CSM Cause Theatre per­for­mance of “Benched” will take place as sched­uled.

The con­vo­ca­tion will bring to­gether fac­ulty and staff as one col­lege to col­lab­o­rate and cel­e­brate one of the col­lege’s core val­ues, re­spect. As part of that value, staff and fac­ulty are work­ing to­gether to col­lect jars of peanut but­ter that will be do­nated to food pantries in Calvert, Charles and St. Mary’s coun­ties.

Dur­ing the All-Col­lege Con­vo­ca­tion, on­line ac­cess will be avail­able at www.csmd.edu and through my.CSMD ser­vices. Classes be­gin for the Fall 10-week ses­sion Oct. 3. The seven-week Fall Minises­sion II will be­gin Oct. 24.

Neibauer to host Free Den­tistry Day

Peo­ple in the Wal­dorf com­mu­nity, and sur­round­ing ar­eas, will have the op­por­tu­nity to re­ceive free den­tal ser­vices at 301-870-4553 on Satur­day, Oct. 1.

Doc­tors and team at Neibauer Den­tal Care will be im­prov­ing the oral health of the com­mu­nity as part of Free Den­tistry Day, a day ded­i­cated to pro­vid­ing free den­tal care to the grow­ing num­ber of Amer­i­cans with­out den­tal in­sur­ance. Ac­cord­ing to the U.S. De­part­ment of Health and Hu­man Ser­vices, ap­prox­i­mately 108 mil­lion Amer­i­cans are liv­ing with­out den­tal in­sur­ance.

Dur­ing Free Den­tistry Day, a choice of one free fill­ing, clean­ing or ex­trac­tion will be pro­vided per pa­tient 7 a.m.-1 p.m. Satur­day, Oct. 1, at 117 St. Pa­tricks Drive in Wal­dorf. Li­brary seeks lo­cal au­thors for event

Charles County Pub­lic Li­brary will host it’s semi-an­nual Au­thor’s Re­cep­tion on 2-4 p.m. Feb. 18, 2017, at the Wal­dorf West Li­brary.

Any lo­cal au­thors (cur­rently liv­ing in South­ern Mary­land) who would like to have their work fea­tured at the Au­thor’s Re­cep­tion should sub­mit a copy of their book (it will be re­turned at the au­thor’s re­quest af­ter the event or can be added to our cir­cu­lat­ing col­lec­tion) to Sarah Guy, pro­gram co­or­di­na­tor, at any Charles County Pub­lic Li­brary branch.

All items sub­mit­ted will be re­viewed by CCPL’s Ac­qui­si­tions De­part­ment to ver­ify the sub­mis­sion meets li­brary min­i­mum stan­dards. All sub­mis­sions must be re­ceived at the li­brary no later than 8 p.m. Dec. 15. Au­thors must in­clude con­tact in­for­ma­tion and must be able to at­tend the Au­thor’s Re­cep­tion on Feb. 18. Au­thors will present a brief overview of their book and will be able to sell copies to the pub­lic.
