Police have identified the victim who died as Mason Cameron Atkins, 18, of Deale. The sheriff’s office did not release the name of the other victim.
This is the fifth homicide this year in Charles County.
Around 1:53 a.m. on Sept. 25, deputies of the Charles County Sheriff’s Office responded to the 10400 block of Popes Creek Road for a reported shooting. The caller said that he and his friend were in a car and had been shot at a different location, the 9100 block of Mona Farm Place, according to police. Upon arrival, officers attempted to resuscitate the critically wounded passenger, but he died from his injuries.
Preliminary investigation indicated that the victims showed up uninvited to a bonfire party on Mona Farm Place, and they were asked to leave, which they did. The two drove about a half mile away, heading toward U.S. 301 when they passed other vehicles that were stopped on the narrow road. After an argument, the suspects in another vehicle pulled out a gun and fired multiple shots, striking both teens. The suspects then fled the scene and the victims drove to Pope Creeks Road.
Detectives are working on leads, and anyone with information about this case is asked to call Det. Shankster at 301-6096513.
