Lackey shuts out Westlake; Burns rushes for over 200 yards, 3 TDs
A season ago, Lackey suffered an 18-6 road loss to Westlake, a game it did not forget coming into Friday night’s Southern Maryland Athletic Conference Chesapeake Division contest.
Behind a dominant defense and a solid rushing attack, the Chargers got some revenge over their Charles County foe, shutting out the visiting Wolverines 28-0 in Indian Head.
Lackey (5-1, 3-0 SMAC Chesapeake) has won four straight games, including a 3-0 win over defending Class 2A state champion Patuxent in Week 5 as it looks to solidify a playoff spot in the 2A South Region after missing a trip to the postseason in 2015.
“Getting a big win last week we didn’t want to have a letdown tonight.” Lackey head coach John Lush said. “We beat a tough Westlake team. They gave us all we could handle early on and I think we just wore them down.
Lackey stuck to its smashmouth offensive style as senior Malik Burns continued to anchor the rushing attack with 223 yards on 21 carries and three touchdowns, all in just three quarters. As a team, the Chargers shed for 319 yards on 41 carries, maintaining an average of over 7 1/2 yards per carry.
Past the halfway point of the season, Burns has rushed well over 1,000 yards and collected his third 200-plus yard performance in four games.
Lackey will be on the road for a 6 p.m. kickoff at Great Mills on Friday. The Hornets defeated Leonardtown in Week 6, 24-16.
“It was another big win again, everyone doubted us and we came out on top,” Burns said. “I just have to give it up to the [offensive] line. They have been consistent all this season and I couldn’t have done it without them.”
After a scoreless first quarter, Lackey got on the board first when Burns bulled his way for a 30-yard touchdown run just 81 seconds into the second.
Lackey senior running back Malik Burns looks for running room in Friday night’s 28-0 win over the visiting Westlake Wolverines in a SMAC Chesapeake Division football contest at Lackey High School in Indian Head. Burns finished with 223 yards on 21 carries and three touchdowns.
