Only he can save us?
I don’t think many people haven’t made up their minds. It amuses me that some think Donald Trump is a Christian, when there is simply no evidence that he goes to church or has thanked the Lord for anything. Hillary Clinton is a Methodist and while not a regular church-goer, she at least knows that it is “Second Corinthians” and not “Two Corinthians” as Trump said it when he spoke at Liberty U.
As for supporting defense, Hillary is, for me, uncomfortably hawkish and is likely to be as liable to use the military to solve problems as Trump. She certainly dislikes Putin and authori- tarians more than he does, as evidenced by his lauding Putin and others of similar authoritarian views.
Which brings us to the heart of the problem. The founding fathers knew that the flaw in democracy is the potential for a demagogue to become president. For the voters to be misled by a charismatic politician who will promise to solve all of your problems tomorrow, if not sooner. So, we have promises that “Only I can defeat ISIS” and “Only I can bring jobs back. You better believe it.”
There are a host of promises that only Trump can deliver, if you believe him. There is one that profound- ly disturbs me. It is the statement that he will stop companies from leaving the USA. That promise reeks of national socialism, and would effectively mean that the government would tell companies where they can operate and soon we would have a managed economy. That would be a disaster.
Could he succeed? No, we are a capitalist nation. But, the fact that he keeps saying it — and that people cheer when they hear him — makes me as concerned for the future of our nation as anything he has said, and any response made to the many actually disturbing promises he has made, if one imagines where we would be if he succeeded.
