Blue Crabs unveil 2017 schedule
Baseball franchise kicks off 10th season in April
The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs recently announced their schedule for the 2017 season that will feature the team’s 10th season anniversary.
The Blue Crabs will once again have a 140-game slate, 70 of which will be played at Regency Furniture Stadium in Waldorf.
Southern Maryland kicks off the campaign in a four-game series versus the Long Island Ducks, starting with opening day April 20 and concluding on April 23.
The Fourth of July will be one of the huge highlights on the schedule as the Blue Crabs will host an Independence Day game versus Sugar Land, the 2016 Atlantic League champi- ons. The patriotic contest comes in the middle of a seven game homestand against the Skeeters and Ducks.
Of the Blue Crabs 70 home contests, 33 will fall on either Friday, Saturday or Sunday.
“We are happy with our 2017 schedule. Of course we will plan a huge celebration for opening day, and a spectacular fireworks show will follow our game on the Fourth of July in the spirit of Independence Day,” said Blue Crabs General Manager Courtney Knichel in a team news release. “Fans can be sure that we are working hard in the off- season to think of ways to bring affordable family fun to Crus- tacean Nation for all 70 of our home games. Each night at the ballpark in 2017 will truly be its own event.”
Southern Maryland’s home schedule will feature seven games in April, 15 games in May, 12 games in June, 14 in July, 16 in August and six in September.
The 20th annual Atlantic League All-Star Game will take place July 12 at TD Bank Ball- park in Bridgewater, N.J., home to the Somerset Patriots.
The final home game of the season will be played on Sept. 17 against the New Britain Bees, which also marks the end of the league’s regular season.
During the franchise’s 10th year the Blue Crabs will have scheduled three games with special start times. May 3 and 17 will feature the ninth annual Baseball in Education Days at the ballpark with a slated 10:35 a.m. start time, and Aug. 2 will feature an 11:05 a.m. start time with Camp and Recreation Day as the featured promotion.
“It is always exciting when the schedule draws near,” Blue Crabs manager Jeremy Owens said. The Blue Crabs finished 57-83 overall in 2016. “The first month of the season is where you want to put all the emphasis on building momentum. Long Island and Somerset were very tough teams last season. Sugar Land was the hottest team in the league and won it all.”
The complete promotional schedule for the upcoming season will be released at a later date. 2017 season tickets and ticket plans are now on sale. Individual tickets for the season are scheduled to go on sale in the New Year.

“Increasing the attendance is always key and building a family atmosphere in the stadium,” Owens said. “Each year the attendance is growing and growing.”
