Paid sick days benefit businesses and families

Earlier this month, Gov. Larry Hogan (R) proposed legislation that would make Mar yland one of only few states to require paid sick days for a significant portion of the state’s employees. This is a step in the right direction for Mar yland employers and employees.

As a Maryland small business owner that offers a more generous paid sick days policy, I know that providing this benefit has been good for my business and my associates. At Man & Machine Inc., we believe paid sick days are an investment in the health of our employees. When sick employ- ees come in to work, it increases the risk of their coworkers becoming sick, and may result in costly mistakes. By eliminating the distraction of illness, I know that my associates can be completely focused on their work and increase our efficiency. They also have the option to use these days to care for a family member, because I believe my employees should not be forced to choose between taking care of a sick child and making ends meet.

Families matter to us. And an owner’s loyalty to them is more than rewarded in their loyalty to us. I hope Governor Hogan’s tax-cut incentive will encourage the implementation of paid sick days programs. While I support the proposed legislation, I believe Maryland businesses can and should do more to take care of their employees.
