North Point girls bas­ket­ball wins re­gion

The North Point High School girls bas­ket­ball team cap­tured the 4A East Re­gion crown with a nar­row, 54-52 vic­tory over host Old Mill of Anne Arun­del County, the Ea­gles’ fifth re­gion ti- tle in the last six sea­sons.

The Ea­gles bid for a 4A state ti­tle, how­ever, came to an end one week later when they were trounced by Walt Whit­man of Mont­gomery County, 64-37, in one of two 4A state semi­fi­nals at Tow­son Univer­sity’s SECU Arena.

In the 4A East Re­gion ti­tle con­test, North Point raced to a com­fort­able 16-7 lead at the end of the first quar­ter and still held a 32-22 ad­van­tage at the in­ter­mis­sion and the Ea­gles main­tained a solid 44-35 lead head­ing into the fourth quar­ter. But the hosts grad­ual- ly chipped away at the Ea­gles lead in the fi­nal frame and got to within a sin­gle bucket be­fore even­tu­ally suc­cumb­ing.

North Point, which ad- vanced to the re­gion fi­nal by trounc­ing Chop­ti­con 51-34 in the sec­tion fi­nals, was led by Necole Hope with 19 points and the Ea­gles lone se­nior, Clara Bryson, added 12 points. The Ea­gles had ear­lier de­feated the Braves, 4847, to cap­ture the South­ern Mary­land Ath­letic Con­fer­ence Cham­pi­onship game in a dra­mat­i­cally dif­fer­ent af­fair.

In the state semi­fi­nal set­back against , four of the Ea­gles five lead­ing scor­ers were un­der­class­men, sug­gest­ing that North Point should be a re­gion and state ti­tle con­tender again in the 2016-17 sea­son un­der coach Michael Ser­pone. North Point con­cluded the 2015-16 sea­son with a 24-3 mark and gar­nered the SMAC ti­tle in ad­di­tion to the re­gion crown.
