Two ar­rested on an­i­mal cru­elty charges

Two women, de­scen­dants of civil rights leader Mal­colm X, were ar­rested last week and charged with an­i­mal cru­elty and theft.

Ma­likah Sa­ban Shabazz, 51, of Stark, N.H., and Bet- tih Bahiyah Shabazz, 19, the daugh­ter and grand­daugh­ter of Mal­colm X, were charged with sev­eral counts of an­i­mal cru­elty af­ter po­lice re­port­edly dis­cov­ered seven pit bull ter­ri­ers in the back of a U-Haul truck, which had been re­ported stolen to Ver­mont State Po­lice, ac­cord­ing to a Charles County Sher­iff’s Of­fice spokesper­son.

Po­lice said the dogs were kept in in­hu­mane con­di­tions and some had suf­fered se­vere in­juries.

On Jan. 25, a Prince Ge­orge’s County po­lice of­fi­cer driv­ing home spot­ted the U-Haul truck which had been re­ported stolen and alerted other of­fi­cers, po­lice re­ported. Later, a Charles County Sher­iff’s Of­fice lo­cated the truck around 9:51 p.m. in a park­ing lot near Drury Drive in La Plata. Both sus­pects were found in­side the ve­hi­cle.
