Kids dance the night away at the preschool prom
More than 100 adults and little ones twirled, sang and limbo-ed their way through the night.
Children and their parents donned their formal best Friday at the Charles County Parks and Recreation Sweet Heart’s Preschool Prom at the Milton Somers Community Center in La Plata.
First, the kids walked a red carpet and took pictures with their parents before entering the dance floor and enjoying the evening.
This is the third year the department has hosted the dance and Sally Bahen, multi-center coordinator for the Charles County Government Department of Community Services, said it’s an opportunity to get families out for an evening of fun.
“Our dance is a chance to have the entire family enjoy an evening participating in age appropriate arts and crafts, singing, free play and dancing while getting to know more about what our recreation department has to offer year round,” Bahen said of the dance.
Kathy and Darryl Almassy of Bryantown brought their daughter Gabi, 3, to the dance. Kathy said she and her family always enjoy attending Parks and Recreation events.
“Everything is always well-organized and interactive. We’re never disappointed,” Kathy said, listing off a number of community events she’s been to this year. “We’ve come out to this dance before and [Darryl and Gabi] have gone to the Father, Daughter dance. Gabi’s favorite is princess events and anything she can get dressed up for. They’re just wonderful.”
“The smiles, laughter and the many photos that are shared that night on social media and later placed in the family albums make the planning, effort and work worthwhile,” Bahen said. “Seeing the parents join in on the Hokey Pokey, bend low for the limbo and join the walking parade makes it a memorable evening for the entire family. We make memories at the event. The attendees are the stars and center of attention.”
Monise and Balvin Brown Jr. of La Plata came out to the preschool prom for the first time with son Balvin Brown III, 1, and daughter Arielle Brown, 3. Monise said she thought the event was “really sweet.”
“The kids are having a really good time,” Monise said. “A friend tagged me on Facebook and I saw pictures from last year’s dance and my friend said they had a blast so I thought it would be fun for us to come to.”
“It’s a good time to get the families out on a Friday,” Jay Warren, multi-center coordinator for the Charles County Government Department of Community Services, said of the evening. “The kids really enjoy it.”
The Milton Somers Community Center will hold its Daddy Daughter Dance for ages 3 to 12 on Friday, April 28. Go to www.charlescountyparks.com for more information.
