CSM to host ‘13th’ screen­ing, panel dis­cus­sion on March 9

The Di­ver­sity In­sti­tute at CSM will spon­sor a doc­u­men­tary screen­ing and panel dis­cus­sion of “13th” at 6:45 p.m. (doors open at 6:30 p.m.), March 9, at the Col­lege of South­ern Mary­land, La Plata Cam­pus, Cen­ter for Busi­ness and In­dustr y (BI Build­ing), Room BI113, 8730 Mitchell Road, La Plata.

The Di­ver­sity In­sti­tute at the Col­lege of South­ern Mary­land in­vites the pub­lic to a spe­cial screen­ing of “13th,” a thought-pro­vok­ing doc­u­men­tary di­rected by Ava Du­Ver­nay, fol­lowed by a panel dis­cus­sion with com­mu­nity lead­ers. The film is an in-depth look at the prison sys­tem in the United States, the crim­i­nal­iza­tion of African-Amer­i­cans and the U.S. prison boom.

Judge E. Gre­gory Wells of Calvert County Cir­cuit Court, Charles County Sher­iff Troy Berry (D), the Rev. Dave Huff­man of South Po­tomac Church and Charles County State’s At­tor­ney Tony Cov­ing­ton (D) are sched­uled to be mem­bers of the dis­cus­sion panel that will fol­low the screen­ing.
