Public VanGO contract awarded to Texas-based MV Transportation
Changes are in the air for Charles County’s public transit ser vice.
The Department of Planning and Growth Management announced this week that the operations contract for VanGO, the county’s public transit service, has been awarded to Dallas, Texas-based MV Transportation, Inc.
VanGO operates both fixed route and specialized door-to-door programs.
The three-year, $17.2 million contract includes a two-year option, said Jeff Barnett, chief of transit for Charles County.
Cincinnati, Ohio-based First Transit Bus Service Solutions Company has been providing VanGO services since 2012, Barnett said. Their contract expires June 30.
The contract was put out for competitive bid in March.
MV Transportation will assume operations on Saturday after midnight, Barnett said.
“Transit staff has been working closely with MV Transportation’s transition team members since award of the contract and is confident of a seamless turnover on July 1,” Barnett said.
Barnett said that, separate from the contract, the county has procured eight new buses, with an additional 10 buses expected to be operational in mid-July.
“Riders should expect to see an immediate improvement with the addition of new buses complementing this contract award,” Barnett said.
Because of the contract transition, the VanGo DoubleMap bus tracking system will not be operational on Saturday, but Barnett said it should be operational by Monday afternoon.
The website, vango. doublemap.com, allows riders to see bus routes online or on mobile devices and to track buses in real-time utilizing GPS technology.
Barnett said MV Transportation has provided excellent service to the county in the past.
“We’re looking forward to renewing that relationship and working with them again,” Barnett said.
