Celebrate local parks and recreation
July is National Parks and Recreation Month, and as summer begins, it’s a great time to celebrate the importance of getting active and enjoying the great outdoors in Charles County.
Our parks and recreational activities are led and operated by the Department of Recreation, Parks, and Tourism. One division with the department, the Parks Division, maintains 50 miles of county trails including the Indian Head Rail Trail, fishing locations, five boating access facilities, a skate park, equestrian facilities, and a regionally-acclaimed golf course.
Charles County parks and recreational facilities offer several specials and events throughout the year. In July, the White Plains Golf Course is offering a special where golfers can play 18 holes for the price of 9 holes, Monday through Friday. Carts are $18. If you work up an appetite, hot dogs are for sale for $1 each.
If you and your family love fishing or want to learn how, there will be free fishing classes on Thursday, July 13, and Thursday, July 29, at Gilbert Run Park from 9:30 a.m. to noon for children ages 6-15. There is also a fishing fundamentals program for ages 10-15 from Monday, July 17 to Thursday, July 20. Children will learn fishing basics, and how to fish from the bank and on a boat, fly fish, and construct fish habitats which will be placed in the lake. Preregistration is required for the classes and program. During July, the park is offering a 50 percent off special on boat rentals from Wednesday, July 19 to Friday, July 21.
In addition to local parks, our county provides fun, quality recreational and leisure activities for all ages through the Recreation Division, including: sport programs and leagues, aquatics, community centers, gymnastics, summer camp programs, fitness classes, arts and crafts, personal enrichment, and special events. Join in the fun in July and participate in the free youth and adult drop-in week from Monday, July 10 to Friday, July 14. Programs include basketball, gymnastics, pickleball, table tennis, volleyball, and water aerobics. Toddlers will also have the opportunity to drop in for gymnastics programs at Elite Gymnastics and Recreation Center, and swim-time at Donald M. Wade Aquatic Center (5305 Piney Church Road, Waldorf) or Henry E. Lackey High School Pool (3000 Chicamuxen Road, Indian Head) on Saturdays throughout the month. There will also be a Kids Night Out at Elite Gymnastics on Saturday, July 29 with a superhero theme.
