Maryland Independent - - Community Forum -

Charles County has great parks, facilities, and things to do for all ages. Why not go out and explore the area? The Crain Memorial Welcome Center, located at 12480 Crain Highway, Newburg, off of U.S. 301 North, helps residents and visitors alike plan their Charles County explorations throughout the year.

Stocked with up-to-date information about Southern Maryland and statewide attractions, special events, and ready-to-help travel savvy staff, the Crain Memorial Welcome Center is a wonderful resource for locals and travelers. This handicap-accessible center is open daily, excluding major holidays, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and the rest area is open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Bring your family and out-of-town company to the center to view the rotating exhibits that illustrate our county and regional history, as well as our diverse recreational attractions. Our most recent exhibit highlights Charles County’s sister city and sister county relationships between Walldorf, Germany, and Waldorf, Maryland; and Jõgeva County, Estonia and Charles County, Maryland.

In addition to exhibits, the center features a wind turbine, the first public wind turbine in Charles County. The turbine provides sustainable electric power to reduce the center’s reliance on the public utility grid, and provides power to an electric vehicle charging station.

Remind your out-of-town friends and family the outdoor portion of the center is pet-friendly; you can let your dog out for a stretch in the pet walk area. If you have an electric vehicle, you can charge-up at the electric vehicle charging station. Take advantage of our restrooms, snacks, and ATM so you’ll be ready to get back out on the road.

The center is not exclusive to travelers stopping in or passing by Charles County. If you want a cheaper alternative to a vacation this summer, try a staycation. Chances are, you may not know all the places and history of your hometown. Have you ever booked a tour at the Dr. Samuel A. Mudd House, kayaked in Mallows Bay, or shopped around the town of La Plata? Visit the places you always said you’d go but haven’t made the time for. Come to the center to learn more about your hometown and where you should travel next. Don’t forget to snap a few photos to treasure as keepsakes, and share them with us on our Charles County Parks and Recreation Facebook page at www.facetyParksRecreation/.
