Charles (Char­lie) Theodore Carl­son Jr., 85, of In­dian Head, MD, passed away peace­fully on Wed­nes­day, Oc­to­ber 4, 2017, with his chil­dren and friends by his side. Char­lie was born July 21, 1932 to the late Florence Schegolin Carl­son Ed­wards and the late Charles Theodore Carl­son.

In ad­di­tion to his par­ents, he is pre­de­ceased by his wife Nancy, whom he mar­ried in 1956. He is sur­vived by his chil­dren: Mar y Faer y, of Stevensville, MD; Charles Carl­son III (Ju­lia), of Me­chan­icsville, MD; Florence De­ment (Jim), of Swan Point, MD; John Carl­son (Michelle), of In­dian Head, MD; Nancy Smythers (Ron­ald), of LaPlata, MD; and Ed­ward Carl­son (Sandie), of Mar­bury, MD. He is also sur vived by 12 grand­chil­dren; 13 great grand­chil­dren; his trusted care provider, Jim Copsey; and his beloved cat, Snowflake.

Char­lie grew up in Man­hat­tan, NY, and served in the United States Marine Corp from 1950-1954, with a tour in Korea. He then joined the Wash­ing­ton DC Metropoli­tan Po­lice Depart­ment where he was a pa­trol of­fi­cer. He then trans­ferred to the White House Po­lice Force for four years be­fore re­turn­ing to the Metropoli­tan Po­lice Depart­ment, where he re­mained un­til his re­tire­ment in 1974. After re­tir­ing from Wash­ing­ton, DC, he served as Chief of Po­lice in District Heights, MD, from 1974-1983. From 1984 un­til his re­tire­ment in 1994, he served as Chief of Po­lice in Up­per Marlboro, MD.

View­ing will be at the Wil­liams Fu­neral Home on Thurs­day, Oc­to­ber 19, from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Ser­vices will be held Friday, Oc­to­ber 20 at 9 a.m. fol­lowed by in­tern­ment at Mary­land Veteran Ceme­tery, Chel­tenham, MD.
