GWL: All-Star Game set for Monday in Chico
Cole Van Den Helder struck out six while allowing seven hits and four runs over six innings to record the win and improve his record to 3-1 on the summer.
The victory, coupled with the Portland Pickles’ 9-6 loss to the Chico Heat earlier on Saturday, moved the Gold Sox (19-29) to four games behind the Pickles (23-25) in the race for the Great West League’s final playoff spot with 12 games remaining.
Rogues 9, Bears 5 In Medford, Ore. – Yuba City scored the first run of the game on a balk, but the rest of the night belonged to the Rogues, who built a 7-1 lead by the fifth inning while sending the Bears to their 15th straight loss.
Brendon Nelson scored on the balk call in the top of the second inning and Michael Lagier connected for a solo home run in the sixth for the Bears, who trailed 9-2 before rallying for three runs in the seventh.
Kaelen Crisosto hit an RBI single, T.J. Dove was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Nelson walked with the bags full to account for Yuba City’s runs in that inning.
Crisosto and Dace Asher recorded two hits each, and Josh Winkler doubled to lead the way for the Bears (10-38) at the plate.
All six teams in the GWL will have today off before a select few take part in the league’s second annual AllStar Game on Monday at 7:05 p.m. at Nettleton Sta- dium in Chico.
Local players participating in the game will be catcher Thomas Fuller, first baseman Brock Ephan, and pitchers Cruz Diddario and Noah Sills for the Gold Sox, and third baseman Josh Winkler and outfielder Creed Smith for the Bears.
