Majority in Yuba-sutter vote to repeal gas tax
It was a sort of call to arms for many Republicans -- a measure, it was hoped, that would create an incentive for the GOP rank and file to show up and vote.
Proposition 6 would have repealed Senate Bill 1, a 2017 piece of legislation raising fuel taxes and fees for road repairs and public transportation. The "Yes" vote was down by nearly 10 points late Tuesday evening.
The measure also would have meant reduced funding for highway and road maintenance and repairs, as well as transit programs, and made public approval mandatory for such future tax increases. Proponents argued that the state had enough general revenue to finance road repairs without a tax increase.
As of press time, 54.5 percent of voters statewide said "no" and 45.5 percent of voters said "yes." The yes votes were in the majority in Yuba-sutter.
