A-D reporter evacuates Chico; now safe
Nothing compares to the devastation at the heart of the Camp Fire, but the scope was tremendous, too. Fire spread right up to the edge of Chico.
Appeal-democrat reporter Ruby Larson and her boyfriend, dog and cat evacuated from their Nord Avenue, Chico apartment Thursday night as a precaution. Her neighbors were also packing up.
She said all day Thursday the streetlights were on because the sky was so dark, and windows had to be closed because of the smoke. Gas station lines were backed up to the main streets and during their two-and-a-half hour drive to Redding, at times they were traveling at only 5 mph.
“It was concerning how fast it started, I couldn’t believe it made it so far,” Larson said Friday.
