The defending Big 8 Conference champion McDonald County High School Lady Mustangs softball team gave fans a preview of the 2016 talent by sweeping both opponents in a jamboree held Saturday at MCHS.

McDonald County opened the four-inning scrimmages by routing East Newton 10-0 behind the pitching of Paige Jones and Hanna Schmit. Jones worked the first three innings, allowing three hits while striking out one. Schmit worked around a pair of fourth inning errors to preserve the shutout.

The Lady Mustangs scored four runs in the first and three each in the third and fourth innings. Kylie Helm led the offense with a pair of homers. Aubrie Dunn also had two hits, including an RBI double, while Cloee Helm added a double and a single. Having one hit each were Schmit, Kenzie Stephens, Whitney Kinser, Kali McClain and Skylar Wright.

McDonald County had to score a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth to pull out an 8-7 win over Nevada. Jones allowed a pair of first-inning runs before the Lady Tigers scored five runs in the third off her and Schmit, who allowed a pair of hits before getting the final out of the inning.

Trailing 2-0 after a half-inning, McDonald County answered with three runs in the bottom of the first on singles by Cloee Helm and Dunn, a walk to Kinser and an error. McDonald County added three more runs in the third with the help of a pair of errors and singles by Kylie Helm, Wright and McClain.

In the bottom of the fourth, Cloee Helm reached on an error and stole second before Schmit sacrificed, sending the speedy Helm all the way home to tie the game. Kyle Helm walked, Kinser singled to set up Dunn’s game winning bunt for the winning run.

Dunn led the offense with two hits while Cloee Helm, Kylie Helm, Chloe Colvin, Wright, McClain and Kinser had one each.
