South­ern Mis­souri Small Ru­mi­nant Work­shop Sched­uled For Sept. 9

AVA — The South­ern Mis­souri Small Ru­mi­nant Work­shop is planned for 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Satur­day, Sept. 9, at Her­itage Farm lo­cated 3.2 miles north of Ava, or nine miles south of Mans­field. A lunch of lamb and goat gy­ros will be served on site.

The An­i­mal Clinic of Ava, Lin­coln Univer­sity and Univer­sity of Mis­souri Ex­ten­sion are part­ner­ing with Her­itage Farm to make this work­shop pos­si­ble.

“If you want to raise sheep or goats for meat or milk, you can learn how to raise them suc­cess­fully at this con­fer­ence,” said Dr. Ted Probert, live­stock spe­cial­ist with Univer­sity of Mis­souri Ex­ten­sion. “The con­fer­ence will pro­vide the ba­sic in­for­ma­tion par­tic­i­pants would need to work with sheep and goats, in­clud­ing hands-on train­ing in the af­ter­noon.”

Top­ics for the con­fer­ence in­clude herd health man­age­ment in­clud­ing foot rot, in­ter­nal par­a­site con­trol, sheep and goat nu­tri­tion in­clud­ing pas­ture and for­age man­age­ment, wool pro­duc­tion in sheep, and co-graz­ing of small ru­mi­nants and cat­tle.

Dr. Char­lotte Clif­ford-Rathert, a small ru­mi­nant vet­eri­nar­ian from Lin­coln Univer­sity Ex­ten­sion, will be a fea­tured guest speaker at the work­shop. She will ad­dress ba­sic nu­tri­tion for small ru­mi­nants, in­te­grated prac­tices for par­a­site man­age­ment, breed­ing prac­tices and rec­og­niz­ing and re­duc­ing dis­eases.

At­ten­dees are also en­cour­aged to bring their check book. A do­nated goat will be auc­tioned off with pro­ceeds be­ing do­nated to Heifer In­ter­na­tional.

Work­shop reg­is­tra­tion is needed by Aug. 31. Work­shop cost is $35 per per­son or $50 per cou­ple. Reg­is­tra­tion checks should be mailed to the An­i­mal Clinic of Ava, PO Box 476, Ava, MO 65608.
