The 2018 McDonald County High School football team made its debut by scoring twice and allowing just one touchdown in a jamboree against Mount Vernon, Neosho and Bolivar on Friday night at Mount Vernon High School.

The jamboree format calls for each team to get 12 plays on offense against the other three schools.

The Mustangs opened the scrimmages on defense against Mount Vernon. The Mountaineers gained 62 yards in 12 plays, and the McDonald County defense bent but didn’t break in keeping Mount Vernon out of the end zone. Dylan Akins recovered a fumble on the Mountaineers sixth play to end Mount Vernon’s best scoring chance.

McDonald County scored on its 10th play on offense. Joe Brown ran for 15 yards before Boston Dowd hit Marshall Foreman for 17 yards to set up Brown’s six-yard touchdown run.

Oakley Roessler carried four times, but two nice gains were called back due to holding penalties. Brown carried three times for 27 yards.

Neosho

McDonald County was shut out in its 12 plays against Neosho that featured mostly junior varsity players on both teams.

McDonald County’s biggest gain was a sevenyard pass from John Howard to Michael Williams.

Neosho was stopped on its first series by a fumbled snap, but on its first play following the fumble and its seventh overall, the Wildcats converted a 40-yard touchdown pass.

Bolivar

The Mustangs closed out the jamboree against Bolivar.

It took McDonald County just two plays to score. Brown ran for eight yards on the first play, and then Roessler broke a tackle and went 32 yards on the second for the touchdown.

Bolivar drove inside the five-yard line but came up its short on its last play.

McDonald County opens its season at Marshfield High School on Aug. 24. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
