Get Recipes Ready For Ca­cao Fest

Haleiwa Farm­ers Mar­ket will cel­e­brate the trans­for­ma­tive power of ca­cao — from col­or­ful pod to de­lec­ta­ble taste sen­sa­tion — with a Hawaii Ca­cao Fes­ti­val from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Jan. 31 dur­ing its reg­u­lar mar­ket of more than 50 ven­dor booths.

The event fea­tures a con­test for the best orig­i­nal chocolate recipe, a shut­tle tour of the Wa­ialua Es­tate Ca­cao Or­chard, pre­sen­ta­tions on ca­cao’s health ben­e­fits from Ola Loa Well­ness and tips on mak­ing your own chocolate liqueur from Skipp Bit­ten­ben­der of the UH Col­lege of Trop­i­cal Agri­cul­ture and Hu­man Re­sources. Ca­cao trees will be on sale from the Ur­ban Gar­den Cen­ter, and keiki can dec­o­rate Mr. Ca­cao Heads, have their faces painted and make crowns for them­selves as fes­ti­val royalty.

Judges for the recipe con­test in­clude state Rep. Michael Ma­gaoay, ra­dio and TV per­son­al­ity Howard Di­cus, free­lance food writer Martha Cheng, cookie-man Wally Amos and Hawaii choco­latier Me­lanie Boudar. Prizes will be awarded for the best Baked Goods, Con­fec­tions, Sa­vory and
