It’s Time To Count The Big Ones
The Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary conducts its annual Sanctuary Ocean Count at 8 a.m. Jan. 30, Feb. 27 and March 27 at more than 60 sites on Oahu, Kauai and the Big Island, and it’s looking for site leaders and volunteer counters.
Counters will monitor the water for signs of whale activity and common behaviors, including tail slaps, breaching and blows when whales surface for breathe. Site leaders manage and oversee data collection on all three count dates and will receive mandatory training.
Sites in Central Oahu include Mokuleia Beach Park, Puaena Point, Shark’s Cove, Turtle Bay Resort and Kaena Point (North Shore). To sign up, call 397-2651, ext. 253, or go online to www.sanctuaryoceancount.org.
