Waimea Val­ley Hosts Kalo Work­shop Aug. 7

A work­shop on the tra­di­tional uses of kalo (taro) will run from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Satur­day at Waimea Val­ley, bring­ing to­gether kalo ex­perts, lo­cal farm­ers and res­i­dents to learn and share their knowl­edge.

The free, in­ter­ac­tive work­shop is on the sec­ond floor at the Proud Pea­cock and is spon­sored by the val­ley’s botan­i­cal and cul­tural pro­gram groups.

Pre­sen­ters in­clude na­tive farmer Jerry Ko­nanui, DOE teacher and vet­eran kalo cul­ti­va­tor Kawehi Ry­der and restora­tion ecol­o­gist Penny Levin of Maui. Levin also is a mem­ber of the Taro Se­cu­rity and Pu­rity Task Force.

Light re­fresh­ments are avail­able, and par­tic­i­pants are wel­come to bring lunch or pur­chase it at Waimea Val­ley Grill. For more in­for­ma­tion, call Jen­nifer Yagodich at 638-5859.
