Mililani vol­un­teer goes the dis­tance for Oahu’s Amer­i­can Red Cross

Mililani res­i­dent Joe Hun­kler was rec­og­nized Oct. 9 as the 2010 Oahu Red Cross Vol­un­teer of the Year dur­ing its He­roes Break­fast. A re­tired en­gi­neer, Joe re­ports daily to Red Cross head­quar­ters on Di­a­mond Head Road. He helped de­ploy 41 vol­un­teers to the Gulf Coast dur­ing the 2008 hur­ri­cane sea­son, pre­pared 20 Hawaii vol­un­teers to go to Amer­i­can Samoa af­ter the tsunami struck, and has cre­ated a men­tor pro­gram for re­tain­ing new vol­un­teers … Chloe Chang of Mililani took sec­ond place (and $100) in HFD’s Fire Pre­ven­tion Week poster con­test for fire­fighter em­ploy­ees and their fam­i­lies. “Smoke Alarms: a sound you can live with” is the theme … The Bill­board Tour­ing Awards Hu­man­i­tar­ian for 2010 is North Shore singer/en­vi­ron­men­tal­ist Jack John­son and his wife Kim, who have de­voted the past seven years to “ef­fect­ing change in their home state of Hawaii and world­wide through in­volve­ment in many so­cial and en­vi­ron­men­tal is­sues.” Be­sides all the projects of Kokua Hawaii Foun­da­tion here, Jack’s lu­cra­tive mu­sic tours in­cor­po­rate green prac­tices, and he gives 100 per­cent of tour prof­its (via the John­son Ohana Char­i­ta­ble Foun­da­tion and its All At Once cam­paign) to lo­cal and na­tional groups who can make the world a bet­ter place.
