Liholiho Will Honor Its Kumu In Garden Tribute

MidWeek Islander (East Oahu) - - NEWS -

In honor of their late Hawaiian kupuna, the faculty, staff and students of King Liholiho Elementary School will hold a tribute ceremony at 1 p.m. Dec. 15 in the school’s Hawaiian Gardens.

Kumu Poni, the school’s beloved Hawaiian studies teacher, died peacefully in his sleep last month at age 51.

“ Our kindergarten through fifth-grade kids are going to sing and perform various songs that were special for Kumu, and they’ve also made tribute cards for his family,” said KLES principal Christina Small.

“We’re holding it at our Hawaiian Gardens because the children planted everything that’s in it and were there to see it all grow, so it’s just a very special place.

“We received a grant and each of our students planted something in the garden,” Small said, adding “Kumu would pick things from it to teach his lessons.

“It’s so beautiful and lush now, so it’s just the right spot for this ceremony.”
