KCC se­ries fo­cus on elder care and ag­ing grace­fully

The Kupuna Ed­u­ca­tion Cen­ter at Ka­pi­olani Com­mu­nity Col­lege cur­rently of­fers classes for those in­ter­ested in care­giv­ing and elder care/ac­tive ag­ing.

The se­ries of cour­ses be­gins with Se­ries I: Fam­ily Care­giv­ing Skills: Per­sonal Care and Trans­fer Tech­niques. Of­fered twice, the first sec­tion is held from 6 to 8 p.m. Feb. 25 to March 11 in Kopiko 242; the sec­ond sec­tion is set from 9 to 11 a.m. April 17 to May 1 in Kopiko 242. Cost is $15.

Se­ries II: The Ba­sics of Fam­ily Care­giv­ing runs from 6 to 8 p.m. ev­ery Wed­nes­day through March 3 in Kopiko 128. Tu­ition costs $30.

Beginning March 31, Se­ries IV: Deal­ing With Your Par­ents’ Stuff will be of­fered from 6 to 8 p.m. ev­ery Wed­nes­day through April 21 in Kopiko 128. Tu­ition costs $50.

Car­ing for el­ders at home is a ca­reer op­tion as well, and the Kupuna Ed­u­ca­tion Cen­ter pro­vides Home Care­Worker Train­ing, Lev­els I, II and III. An ori­en­ta­tion will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Feb. 23 in Kopiko 240. An in­ter­view and ap­pli­ca­tion process is re­quired prior to en­try.

KCC also has a TV se­ries ded­i­cated to Hawaii’s se­niors and their fam­i­lies. Ti­tled Kupuna Con­nec­tions, the show airs at 7 a.m. each Satur­day on ca­ble chan­nel 55, fea­tur­ing a va­ri­ety of top­ics for kupuna, in­clud­ing adult day care, res­i­den­tial op­tions for se­niors, keep­ing brains healthy and more.
