Whale Watch Needs Counters, Leaders
Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary conducts its annual Sanctuary Ocean Count at 8 a.m. Feb. 27 and March 27 at more than 60 sites on Oahu, Kauai and the Big Island, and it’s looking for site leaders and volunteer counters.
Counters monitor the water for signs of whale activity and common behaviors, including tail slaps, breaching and blows when whales surface for breathe. Site leaders manage and oversee data collection on all three count dates and receive mandatory training.
Sites in East Oahu include Makapuu Point Lighthouse, Halona Blowhole, Lanai Lookout, Hanauma Bay, Spitting Caves and Diamond Head Lookout. To sign up, call 397-2651, ext. 253 or go online to www.sanctuaryoceancount.org.
