Arce Re­turn­ing With Am­bi­tious Plans

Kais e r se­nior guard Chantelle Arce didn’t have to look far for a role model in basket­ball. Older sis­ter Chan­dler was right there.

“She set the tone for me,” Chantelle said of Chan­dler, who now plays on the Cham­i­nade women’s team. “My fam­ily al­ways has had high ex­pec­ta­tions for me, and I want to live up to them. My sis­ter had the high­est amount of 3point­ers in the state her se­nior year, and I want to have a good se­nior year like she did.”

Arce is the lead­ing scorer a mong Kai s e r re­turnees, hav­ing av­er­aged 8.1 points per out­ing last sea­son. The Cougars will host a pair of 6:30 p.m. games this week: de­fend­ing DI state c h a mpion Kame­hameha Thurs­day and Mid Pac Satur­day.

Arce re­cently spoke with Mid­Week’s East Oahu Is­lan­der.

What is your ear­li­est sports mem­ory? When I started play­ing basket­ball in f ourth grade at St. El­iz­a­beth’s. I tried out for the team be­cause of my sis­ter. I didn’t know I’d still be play­ing now, but I’ve played ever since.

Who has had t he big­gest im­pact on your life? My par­ents (Brian and Cristina) be­cause of their work ethic. They taught me to work hard, and that has in­flu­enced me in all that I do. The life’s lessons they’ve taught me have helped me to be­come a bet­ter per­son.

What area of your game did you fo­cus on the most this off-sea­son? My of­fense. I worked out a lot with my dad in sum­mer and af­ter school, not only on my shoot­ing, but drib­bling drills.

Who among your team­mates plays the tough­est de f e ns e at pr a c t i c e ? Brandi Arita. She shuts d own eve r y o n e she de­fends. She works so hard, and she’s quick.

When you surf t he In­ter­net, what web­site do you go to the most? In­sta­gram or Pin­ter­est.

What movie could you watch over and over? Ti­tanic or Pitch Per­fect. I never get tired of those movies.

What item could you not live with­out? My cell phone. I use it ev­ery sin­gle day; it takes up most of my time.

Who is your fa­vorite musical artist? Bey­once. I like her type of mu­sic.

When you have free time, how do you like to spend it? I’m ei­ther on my phone, watch­ing TV, sleep­ing or eat­ing.

Where do you see your­self in 10 years? I see my­self hav­ing grad­u­ated from col­lege in nurs­ing. My sis­ter and I also would like to go away for a cou­ple of years to Cal­i­for­nia or Florida.

If you were plan­ning a trip, what would be your dream des­ti­na­tion? France or Italy.

You’re s t uc k on Ka­hoolawe and can have just one food. What would it be? Pasta. I love fet­tuc­cine Al­fredo.
