Classes Teach DIY Dec­o­ra­tions

This hol­i­day sea­son, learn to cre­ate cen­ter­pieces and other decor with “un­thirsty” plants, right here in West Oahu.

The Board of Wa­ter Sup­ply and the Friends of Halawa Xeriscape Gar­den host a suc­cu­lent hol­i­day decor workshop from 10:30 a.m. to noon Satur­day at the gar­den’s Green Lanai.

Learn about how th­ese drought­tol­er­ant plants are clipped for plant­ing, how to care for suc­cu­lents, how to main­tain liv­ing cen­ter­pieces to last through the hol­i­days and more. All par­tic­i­pants should bring two small wire wreath forms.

Other op­tional ma­te­ri­als to bring in­clude a col­umn can­dle, rib­bon and other hol­i­day decor to in­clude with your cre­ation.

The workshop fee is $10 and in­cludes in­struc­tion and guid­ance, moss, florist wire and plant­ing me­dia. For Friends of Halawa Xeriscape Gar­den mem­bers, fee is $5. Ad­vanced reg­is­tra­tion for the course is re­quired and closes at 2 p.m. Fri­day or when all spa­ces are filled. For more ways to cre­ate a lit­tle home­made hol­i­day cheer, Malama Learn­ing Center hosts a Nat­u­ral Hol­i­day Dec­o­ra­tions workshop from 9 a.m. to noon Satur­day at ‘Ilima at Lei­hano in Kapolei. Through a hands-on workshop, par­tic­i­pants will learn how to cre­ate dec­o­ra­tions from green waste and other nat­u­ral ma­te­ri­als.

Ma­te­ri­als will be pro­vided, but at­ten­dees also should bring ad­di­tional dec­o­ra­tions and glue guns. Fee is $15 per per­son, or $40 for fam­i­lies of up to three peo­ple.
