Hanauma Has Talks On Tur­tles

Hanauma Bay Ed­u­ca­tion Pro­gram is into tur­tles this month, of­fer­ing free weekly lec­tures for the public at the park by lo­cal ex­perts and re­search af­fil­i­ates.

Each free Sun­day talk be­gins at 3 p.m. in Cyn­thia Bond Me­mo­rial Theater. For more in­for­ma­tion, call 397-5840. Still ahead are the fol­low­ing top­ics:

• Feb. 8 — “Marine tur­tle strand­ing im­pacts re­lated to fish­ing gear in­ter­ac­tions in the main Hawai­ian Is­lands” with Sarah Alessi, Shan­dell Brun­son and Devon Francke of Na­tional Oceanic and At­mo­spheric Ad­min­is­tra­tion (NOAA)

• Feb. 15 — “Cap­tive Sea Tur­tle Man­age­ment at Sea Life Park” with Jeff Pawloski, Sea Life Park cu­ra­tor

• Feb. 22 — “Mi­grat­ing leatherback tur­tles en­joy win­ter ‘ lay­overs’ in Hawai­ian wa­ters” with T. Todd Jones of NOAA.

The on­go­ing out­reach sem­i­nar se­ries is spon­sored by the Uni­ver­sity of Hawaii Sea Grant Pro­gram. The ini­tial Fe­bru­ary lec­ture, an over­view of lo­cal tur­tle re­search, was held Feb. 1.
