Women’s His­tory Films, Talks

Wind­ward Com­mu­nity Col­lege will mark Women’s His­tory Month this week with two film screen­ings and two speak­ers.

Tues­day’s agenda (March 17) fea­tures a screen­ing of The Codes of Gen­der: Iden­tity and Per­for­mance in Popular Cul­ture at 10 a.m., fol­lowed by a pre­sen­ta­tion on the trans­gen­der ex­pe­ri­ence at 11:30 by Ka­leo Te­vaitea Tanoa Ramos, an ac­tivist in LGBTQIA causes (les­bian, gay, bi­sex­ual, trans­gen­der, ques­tion­ing, in­ter­sex and asex­ual).

Thurs­day will be a dis­cus­sion with Brooke Con­way on sex­ual vi­o­lence, re­sources, statis­tics and pre­ven­tion at 10 a.m., and the film Tough Guise 2: Vi­o­lence, Man­hood and Amer­i­can Cul­ture at 11:30 a.m.

The Codes of Gen­der ex­am­ines Irv­ing Goff­man’s the­ory that de­pic­tions of the male and fe­male body in ad­ver­tis­ing re­in­forces nor­ma­tive ideas about gen­der, while Tough Guise 2 looks at the vi­o­lent and sex­ist mes­sages sent to young men and boys from ev­ery as­pect of pop cul­ture.

Ramos has worked with such or­ga­ni­za­tions as Life Foun­da­tion, Pride at Work Hawaii, GSA Hawaii and more, and Con­way is manager for ed­u­ca­tion and com­mu­nity out­reach at Ka­pi­olani Med­i­cal Cen­ter’s Sex Abuse Treat­ment Cen­ter.
