Ryan Seacrest fumbled when he first met Aaron Rodgers

Milwaukee Journal Sentinel - - TAP DAILY - CHRIS FORAN

When Ryan Seacrest met Aaron Rodgers, he embarrassed himself by not recognizing the Packers quarterback — and then raving about the “great” NFC Championship Game the Packers lost to Seacrest’s hometown team, the Falcons.

On “Live With Kelly and Ryan” on Friday, Seacrest — the workaholic host of “American Idol” and a popular Los Angeles radio show, as well as the daytime talk show — was talking with co-host Kelly Ripa about his relative ignorance about all things sports.

To illustrate, he recounted a name-dropping-filled story about going to talk-show host Ellen DeGeneres’ birthday party last January. Going up to the bar to get a beer, Seacrest said, he struck up a conversation with an athletic-looking guy at the bar whom he didn’t recognize.

Seacrest asked the guy why he was at the party; the man replied his girlfriend, an actress, was a friend of Ellen’s. When Seacrest asked him what he did, he said he played football.

Seacrest, an Atlanta native whose interest in football apparently extends solely to the Atlanta Falcons, wanted to look like he was current on the game, so he jumped in, telling the guy at the bar about how the Packers got “crushed” and how “psyched” he was about the Falcons going to the Super Bowl.

“What position do you play?” Seacrest asked him. “Quarterback.” “Who do you play for?” “Green Bay Packers.” “Are you Aaron Rodgers? Let me buy you a beer.”

The Falcons beat the Packers, 44-21, in the NFC Championship Game. (The Falcons later lost to the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl, 34-28.) Rodgers and his then-girlfriend, actress Olivia Munn, broke up in April.
