DeMerit is on Hall ballot

Green Bay native Jay DeMerit is among the firstyear eligibles nominated for the National Soccer Hall of Fame’s class of 2018.

He was a member of the U.S. men’s that won the 2007 CONCACAF Gold Cup. DeMerit, 38, was also on the U.S. team that played in the 2010 World Cup. He also served as the captain for the Major League Soccer’s Vancouver Whitecaps.

Also on the ballot for the first time are Juan Pablo Angel, Bobby Convey, Brad Friedel, Carlos Bocanegra, Thierry Henry, Stuart Holden, Eddie Johnson and Lori Lindsey.

To be eligible, a player must have played at least 20 full internatio­nal games for the United States (reduced to 10 if the games were before 1990); or have played at least five seasons in an American first-division profession­al league and been a postseason league all-star at least once; or played at least five seasons in the Major Indoor Soccer League between the end of the NASL in 1984 and the end of the MISL in 1992, and been selected as a first-team postseason all-star in at least one of those seasons.

NBA

Dallas Mavericks guard Wesley Matthews has a broken bone in his lower right leg and is likely to miss the rest of the season.

The team said the 31-year-old former Marquette standout was injured in the first quarter against Memphis on Saturday. The nine-year veteran played into the fourth quarter of the Mavericks’ 11480 win.

The injury was announced Monday and described as a fracture to the right proximal fibula, just below the knee.

GOLF

Tiger Woods and Ernie Els will duel in the Presidents Cup again, this time as captains.

Woods and Els have agreed to be captains for the 2019 matches in Melbourne, Australia, according to two people involved in the Presidents Cup.

Woods has been heavily involved in team event while not playing in recent years because of back injuries. The 2019 matches will be Dec. 12-15 at Royal Melbourne, the latest the Presidents Cup has been played.

SOCCER

Greece indefinite­ly suspended its soccer league, a day after the gun-toting owner of PAOK Thessaloni­ki marched onto the field following a disputed goal in a match.

FIFA urged Greek authoritie­s to take swift action against PAOK owner Ivan Savvidis or face a possible suspension.

Savvidis walked onto the field twice accompanie­d by bodyguards, and appeared to be carrying a pistol in a holster around his waist.
