Man’s gun fires while he is in­side squad car

A man de­tained af­ter a shoot­ing that closed the free­way ended up in a Mil­wau­kee County Sher­iff’s Of­fice squad car with a gun that fired, au­thor­i­ties con­firmed Wed­nes­day.

No one was in­jured when the gun went off, ac­cord­ing to Mil­wau­kee Po­lice Depart­ment spokes­woman Sgt. Sheronda Grant.

The Mil­wau­kee Po­lice Depart­ment is han­dling the in­ves­ti­ga­tion into the in­ci­dent, which oc­curred shortly af­ter 11 a.m. Tues­day.

Of­fi­cers ini­tially went to the area of South 4th Street and West Lapham Av­enue af­ter re­ports of bul­lets hit­ting some nearby cars, po­lice said. At least one lo­cal me­dia out­let re­ported peo­ple in­side two ve­hi­cles ex­changed gun­fire.

No one was in­jured, Grant said. That shoot­ing prompted all lanes of I-43/94 north­bound near the Becher Street/Mitchell Street exit to close for about three hours.

Two men were ar­rested in con­nec­tion with the in­ci­dent, Grant said. Ages for the men were not im­me­di­ately avail­able late Wed­nes­day.

One of the men had a gun that fired in­side a deputy’s squad car dur­ing the ini­tial in­ves­ti­ga­tion, she said.
