Dodgers’ Bauer reinstated
IN THE WORLD OF SPORTS
Trevor Bauer was reinstated Thursday by Major League Baseball’s independent arbitrator, allowing the pitcher to resume his career at the start of the 2023 season.
The 31-year-old Los Angeles Dodgers star was given an unprecedented two-season suspension without pay by baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred on April 29 for violating the league’s domestic violence and sexual assault policy after a San Diego woman said Bauer beat and sexually abused her last year, an accusation the pitcher denied.
The players’ association filed a grievance on behalf of the former Cy Young Award winner, and a three-person panel headed by independent arbitrator Martin Scheinman started hearing the case on May 23.
Scheinman upheld a 194-game suspension rather than Manfred’s intended 324-game penalty but reinstated Bauer immediately, assigning 50 games to cover part of the lengthy time Bauer was put on administrative leave while MLB investigated during the 2021 season and early this year.
“Can’t wait to see y’all out at a stadium soon!” Bauer wrote on Twitter.
Bauer will lose more than $37 million in salary for the final 144 games of last season and for the first 50 games of next season, through May 23. The lost salary next year is effectively a clawback from part of his administrative leave, when he continued to receive pay.

Wil Myers agreed to a $7.5 million, one-year contract with the Cincinnati Reds on Thursday, joining his third big league club after spending the previous eight seasons with San Diego.
Veteran catcher Curt Casali reached a $3.25 million, one-year deal with Cincinnati. The contracts for Myers and Casali each have a mutual option for the 2024 season.
Veteran infielder Mike Moustakas was designated for assignment. The 34-year-old three-time all-star hit .214 with seven homers and 25 RBI in 78 games in his last season. He has $22 million remaining on contract signed in December 2019.
Orioles get catcher: The Baltimore Orioles have acquired catcher James McCann and $19 million from the New York Mets for a player to be named.
McCann was an all-star in 2019 for the Chicago White Sox, but hit just .195 with three home runs and 18 RBI for the Mets last season. He joins a Baltimore team that already has perhaps the top young catcher in the game in Adley Rutschman.
The 32-year-old McCann could be a capable backup and fill the type of role veteran Robinson Chirinos did last season. McCann became expendable to the Mets when they agreed last week to a $15 million, two-year contract with free-agent catcher Omar Narváez that was announced Thursday.
Angels add Drury: Infielder Brandon Drury has agreed to a $17 million, two-year contract with the Los Angeles Angels.
Right-hander Oliver Ortega was designated for assignment Thursday to make room on the Angels’ 40-man roster for Drury, who hit a career-best 28 homers last season while playing for Cincinnati and San Diego. He won the Silver Slugger award as a utility player.
Lugo joins Padres: Free-agent reliever Seth Lugo and the San Diego Padres finalized a $15 million, two-year contract. Lugo gets a $7.5 million salary next season, and his deal includes a $7.5 million player option for 2024.
Lugo, 33, went 3-2 with a 3.60 ERA and three saves over 62 outings and 65 innings with the Mets last season. The versatile right-hander spent his first seven big league seasons with New York.

Trevor Lawrence leaped for a touchdown and the Jacksonville Jaguars continued their push toward the playoffs with their third straight victory, 19-3, over an embarrassed Zach Wilson and the New York Jets on a rainy, windy night Thursday in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
Lawrence finished 20 of 31 for 229 yards and ran for 51 yards and the score on seven carries for the Jaguars (7-8). Wilson was booed frequently before he was replaced in the third quarter by Chris Streveler, elevated from the practice squad before the game. Jacksonville would win the AFC South title with victories in its final two games.
“It shows this team is growing,” Lawrence said. “We don’t have to have 40 points to win . ... Whatever it takes to win, we’re able to do.”
