Boathouse Captures Nautical Spirit

Milwaukee Magazine - - Navigator - - KRISTINE HANSEN

BOATHOUSES ARE A COMMON sight along Wisconsin’s shorelines. But few are as inviting as this 480-square-foot construction on Pewaukee Lake.

The interior of the one-room stunner, at the hands of Jessica Jubelirer of Jessica Jubelirer Interior Design, blurs the line between outside and in. Barn-style doors on the lake side slide open to reveal the lake and the family’s private pier. On another wall, half-doors allow gentle breezes in or frame a view.

Guided by a vision for a “fun, whimsical, nautical place for people to gather,” Jubelirer “wanted the architecture of the space to meld with the original house that’s on the property.”

French blue and crisp white hues in the sofa, area rugs and throw pillows evoke the seashore, while a skylight and porthole windows that recall ship life flood the house with natural light.

Simple roll-up shades in a lake-inspired blue continue the theme. A twin Edison-bulb light fixture above the two blue sofas casts a soft glow. All fabrics are indoor-outdoor appropriate and family friendly.

“We go down there and read a lot,” says the homeowner, “and the kids hang out there with their friends. To be on the water and out of the sun is lovely.”
