There’s an old say­ing that sug­gests, “If in doubt, add more power!” And we have to ad­mit, some Model Air­plane News edi­tors do be­lieve there’s just no sub­sti­tute for horse­power. But when it comes to se­lect­ing which type of power sys­tem to use, many RC mod­el­ers could use a lit­tle help. For this ar­ti­cle, we’ve rounded up some ba­sic setup and op­er­a­tion tips com­monly used for glow-, ga­so­line-, and elec­tric-power sys­tems. If you’re look­ing for some­thing to power your new­est project, this ar­ti­cle will high­light what’s in­volved with each sys­tem and what you’ll need to know to be suc­cess­ful.

For to­day’s RC model air­planes, there are three types of power sys­tems you can choose from: glow, ga­so­line, and elec­tric. Each type has its own re­quire­ments and ad­van­tages.
