It’s easy to in­stall fuel fil­ters back­ward if you are not pay­ing at­ten­tion. If the fil­ter is in­stalled in­cor­rectly, con­tam­i­nants will col­lect on the wrong side of the fil­ter el­e­ment and can po­ten­tially clog the fuel line. Also if you re­in­stall a dirty fil­ter back­ward, fuel run­ning through it will ac­tu­ally carry dirt off the fil­ter screen and into the car­bu­re­tor. To avoid this, use a hobby knife to scribe an ar­row on the alu­minum cas­ing to in­di­cate the proper fuel-flow di­rec­tion. For greater vis­i­bil­ity, fill in the scratched-on ar­row with a marker.
