Keeping you up to date

Our newest editorial offerings include weekend coverage, conference series

Modern Healthcare - - Opinions Editorials - DAVID BURDA Editor

We’re going to take a short break from our gavel-to-gavel coverage of the national healthcare reform debate to make a brief commercial announcement. What do you think of our expanded editorial coverage this year? Here’s a recap: In January, we committed ourselves to bringing you breaking healthcare business and policy news seven days a week, not just during the historic five-day publishing cycle of most business-to-business publications. And we’re glad we did. If you haven’t noticed, the Obama administration likes to make healthcare news on Saturdays and Sundays, and we’ve been there to report it all. Through Sunday, Oct. 11, we’ve posted 197 stories on ModernHealth over weekends and holidays since Jan. 1. The reader traffic to our site during that period compared with the same period last year is up more than 90%.

In February, we created a new section on our Web site called Crain Healthcare News. It features breaking healthcare business and policy news from our sister publications at Crain Communications, our parent publishing company. There you’ll find links to national, regional and local healthcare stories just a little off-center from our traditional coverage but still of high interest to curious readers who want to know more about how healthcare is viewed from other angles.

In April, we launched our new Live@ electronic show daily series, starting with the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society annual conference and exhibition in Chicago. After Live@HIMSS, we produced Live@HFMA from the Healthcare Financial Management Association’s Annual National Institute in Seattle and our just completed Live@MGMA from the Medical Group Management Association’s conference in Denver. Each issue in the Live@ series features breaking news from its respective conference, exclusive video interviews with key health- care executives and leaders, a reader poll and more. To see our coverage of those events, please visit the Live@ section of ModernHealth

In June, we published the results of our first IT Case Study Contest. We asked our readers to submit original case studies on information technology implementation projects and tell us how those projects improved patient care and how they intended to seek stimulus money for those projects under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. Fortyone healthcare organizations submitted case studies. We selected the top five and published them in a special section in our June 29 issue. We posted all of the case studies on ModernHealth and held a webinar with three of the winning organizations on Sept. 23. The webinar was one of six editorial webinars held or scheduled this year. The other topics included: investor-owned hospital chains; IT and rural hospitals; H1N1 compliance issues; patient collections; and patient safety.

In September, we began publishing our Sunday evening electronic newsletter, Advance Notice. Each issue features a video clip of yours truly or another member of our editorial staff who previews the next weekly edition of Modern Healthcare. Advance Notice also links readers to all the news that broke over the weekend and to our “most requested” section of our Web site, where readers can see what everyone else is reading. Since its launch on Sept. 13, Advance Notice itself has been the most requested feature on our site on the Mondays and Tuesdays following each Sunday’s edition.

Also in September, the weekly edition of Modern Healthcare became available in a version for the Kindle electronic reader. You can subscribe to the Kindle edition of Modern Healthcare through a link at the bottom of the ModernHealth home page.

We welcome feedback on all our new editorial features. How can we make them even more useful to you? Thank you for reading (watching, listening, clicking and scrolling).
