“The report produced by the Trust for America’s Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation called for increased federal funding, modernized vaccine production and additional measures to reach out quickly to high-risk populations. ... We need our state and federal health agencies to review their measures immediately and make changes before another outbreak forces their hand. And local agencies, some of whom handled the process of distributing shots very well while others were less adept, need to review their procedures as well. “The word on Capitol Hill this week is that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid are up for a quick game of pingpong. The ‘ball’ is healthcare reform, and the game would take place almost completely out of public view. … We understand that this pingpong tactic has been used before, by both parties, to speed final passage of controversial bills. We also understand that conference committees have often done much of their real work behind closed doors. That doesn’t make it right. Especially not in this case.”
