West Penn Al­legheny sys­tem taps Bur­fitt as its new chief

West Penn Al­legheny Health Sys­tem named Gre­gory Bur­fitt as pres­i­dent and CEO of the sys­tem’s two Pittsburgh hos­pi­tals, ef­fec­tive Feb. 1. In a newly cre­ated role, Bur­fitt suc­ceeds Con­nie Ci­brone and Mark Palmer as chief ex­ec­u­tive of the two-cam­pus, 465-bed Al­legheny Gen­eral Hospi­tal and the 500-bed West­ern Penn­syl­va­nia Hospi­tal, re­spec­tively. Ci­brone re­signed in Septem­ber 2008 and Palmer re­signed in July 2007. Bur­fitt will join West Penn, Pittsburgh, from health­care con­sul­tants BDC Ad­vi­sors. He was pre­vi­ously pres­i­dent and CEO of Cen­tura Health for a lit­tle more than two years be­fore the En­gle­wood, Colo.based sys­tem ter­mi­nated his con­tract cit­ing dif­fer­ences in man­age­ment phi­los­o­phy. Bur­fitt’s age could not be ob­tained by dead­line. Bur­fitt’s role does not in­clude over­sight of the 290-bed West­ern Penn­syl­va­nia Hospi­tal-Forbes Re­gional Cam­pus, Mon­roeville, Pa.
