West Penn Allegheny system taps Burfitt as its new chief
West Penn Allegheny Health System named Gregory Burfitt as president and CEO of the system’s two Pittsburgh hospitals, effective Feb. 1. In a newly created role, Burfitt succeeds Connie Cibrone and Mark Palmer as chief executive of the two-campus, 465-bed Allegheny General Hospital and the 500-bed Western Pennsylvania Hospital, respectively. Cibrone resigned in September 2008 and Palmer resigned in July 2007. Burfitt will join West Penn, Pittsburgh, from healthcare consultants BDC Advisors. He was previously president and CEO of Centura Health for a little more than two years before the Englewood, Colo.based system terminated his contract citing differences in management philosophy. Burfitt’s age could not be obtained by deadline. Burfitt’s role does not include oversight of the 290-bed Western Pennsylvania Hospital-Forbes Regional Campus, Monroeville, Pa.
