Disturbed by indications that retail or “convenient care” clinics will expand their scope of practice to include management of diabetes and hypertension, the American Academy of Family Physicians announced that it has revised its policy on these facilities to include opposition to clinic practitioners providing diagnosis, treatment and management of chronic medical conditions. “There are some retail clinics that appear to be changing their business model, and that’s why we changed our policy,” AAFP President Lori Heim said. “The expansion into disease management, we think, is the opposite direction they should be going.”
