Regina Ben­jamin is the 18th sur­geon gen­eral of the United States. A fam­ily medicine physi­cian, Ben­jamin, 53, has ded­i­cated her ca­reer to help­ing the un­der­served ac­cess health­care. She is the founder and for­mer CEO of the Bayou La Ba­tre (Ala.) Ru­ral Health Clinic and for­mer as­so­ciate dean for ru­ral health at the Uni­ver­sity of South Alabama Col­lege of Medicine in Mo­bile. In 2002, she was named pres­i­dent of the Med­i­cal As­so­ci­a­tion of the State of Alabama, be­com­ing the first black woman to lead a state med­i­cal so­ci­ety. Pres­i­dent Barack Obama chose Ben­jamin as his sur­geon gen­eral in July 2009.
