“Lawmakers in Arizona have sent the harshest anti-immigrant measure in the nation to their governor. … The frustration that fueled California’s ugly and unconstitutional Proposition 187—an attempt to deny social services, healthcare and education to illegal immigrants—has taken hold in Arizona, where Latinos now make up only about 15% of registered voters but account for almost half of all births and half of the K-12 population. … It’s hard to fault state lawmakers for trying to solve those problems while leaders in Washington avoid them.”

— Chicago Tribune “Unions representing nurses launched a boisterous campaign to defeat Republican gubernatorial candidate Meg Whitman on the same day last week that they helped kill a bill to police the healthcare profession. In both cases, the nurses’ activity was more about unionism than it was about quality healthcare. … Despite their stated dedication to their patients, the nurses joined with dentists and others to kill Senate Bill 1111 … which would have helped ... track nurses fired for malfeasance, including patient abuse.”
