As sci­en­tific ad­vances make it pos­si­ble to de­tect chem­i­cals in smaller and smaller con­cen­tra­tions in wa­ter, traces of phar­ma­ceu­ti­cals are in­creas­ingly be­ing found. And reg­u­la­tors are step­ping in to monitor how hos­pi­tals are dis­pos­ing of their drugs. “I think health­care fa­cil­i­ties are concerned about flush­ing but don’t re­ally un­der­stand what al­ter­na­tives are avail­able to them,” says Janet Good­win, of the EPA, left.
