About that visit

Modern Healthcare - - Opinions Letters -

While Vin Capece and I were honored to be on the cover of the most recent issue of Modern Healthcare (July 26), I would like to clarify one point in the article that may be inadvertently misleading to your readers.

The article starts with a reference to a visit that several of us from Middlesex Hospital made to Suburban Hospital in Maryland in July 2009. In the context of the article, it may appear that the ultimate decision of our board to remain independent was influenced in some way by that visit. That is not the case. We were very impressed with the success of the affiliation between Suburban Hospital and Johns Hopkins Health System and, if anything, that positive example was a strong motivator in pursuing the benefits of an affiliation.

The fact that the decision was finally made to remain independent was based on a number of factors specific to the board and this hospital at the particular moment in time the decision was made. As someone who has been a strong supporter of the benefits of hospital affiliations, it is my belief that the decision to affiliate can be a wise one, especially with an institution of the unparalleled caliber of Johns Hopkins.

Robert Kiely President and CEO Middlesex Hospital Middletown, Conn.
